Black College Home

The application roadmap

Every step to apply — in the right order.

One Application · One Fee · Multiple Institutions

When applications open, Black College Home will bring this process together in one place. For now, pre-register to be notified and use the roadmap below to get ready. Pre-registration is not a college application.

Deadlines differ at every school, so we don't guess dates. We give you the roadmap: what to do, when to do it, and how to stay ahead of each school on your list. Every HBCU and PBI in our directory links to its official site, where its real deadlines live.

STEP 1

Junior year: build your list

  • Keep your grades up — junior-year transcript is the one schools see most
  • Take the SAT or ACT at least once, so you have time to retake it
  • Research HBCUs and PBIs in the directory and save your favorites
  • Visit campuses — in person or virtually — and note application deadlines

STEP 2

Summer before senior year: get ready

  • Draft your personal essay — most schools want one, and it can often be reused
  • Start the FAFSA conversation at home and gather tax documents early
  • Ask teachers, coaches, and mentors for recommendation letters before the rush
  • Narrow your list to the schools you will actually apply to

STEP 3

Fall of senior year: apply

  • Apply early in the fall — earlier applications get earlier decisions
  • Check each school's official site for its real deadlines and fees
  • Send test scores and transcripts where they're required
  • Apply for scholarships continuously — treat it like a part-time job

STEP 4

Winter and spring: compare and decide

  • File the FAFSA as soon as it opens to unlock aid offers
  • Compare financial aid packages side by side, not just sticker prices
  • Watch for acceptance letters and enrollment deadlines
  • Take your time — visit again if you can before you commit

STEP 5

Spring and summer: say yes and prepare

  • Pay your enrollment deposit by the school's deadline
  • Sign up for orientation and submit housing applications early
  • Register for classes and set up your student accounts
  • Pack, plan, and get ready for move-in — your journey starts
