Black College Home

For counselors & advisors

A shared mission: lifting every student toward a college future. We're here to help.

You advise hundreds of students, the landscape keeps changing, and the same questions eat your week. Black College Home gives you the HBCU knowledge, ready-made materials, and printable tools to send students to best-fit schools — without adding hours to your day.

Why this page exists

Counselors are ready to advise. Time is the problem.

372 : 1

The national average student-to-counselor ratio in 2024–25 — well above the 250:1 recommendation. You can't add hours to the week, so the materials have to save them.

41%

of counselors in a January 2026 survey of 1,606 said they spend up to 4–5 hours a week answering the same basic questions. Our shareable answers target exactly that.

14%

of students headed to an HBCU credit encouragement from their school. Most students who aren't considering one simply don't know much about them — exposure, not interest.

Drawn from national counselor surveys (2024–26), UNCF's research on HBCU awareness, and financial-aid and summer-melt studies.

The 10-minute explainer

Everything you need to talk about HBCUs with confidence.

Three short reads — or print the primer and keep it in your desk.

What an HBCU is

  • 100+ colleges and universities founded before 1964 whose primary mission was educating Black Americans
  • Public and private; two-year and four-year; small colleges to major research universities, in every region
  • Open to students of every race and background — and increasingly diverse
  • Known for close mentoring, strong alumni networks, and graduating an outsized share of the nation's Black professionals relative to enrollment

Four myths to retire

  • “Only for Black students” — open to all, and enrollments keep diversifying
  • “Too expensive” — many cost less than national averages, with dedicated scholarships (UNCF, TMCF, school-specific); verify real net cost per school
  • “Less rigorous” — fully accredited, with graduates advancing to top graduate and professional programs
  • “A niche choice” — 100+ options across regions, sizes, majors, and selectivity

How to bring it up with any student

  • “Have you looked at HBCUs? Here's why I ask.” Name the category — students can't choose a school they've never heard of
  • Tie it to what they already want: major, size, region, band, brotherhood and sisterhood
  • Make it a research assignment, not a pitch — one directory link and let the schools make the case
